WHAT DO WE DO AT
NURSERY SCHOOL?
One of the greatest thrills we get, as parents and teachers, is to watch the learning process in a child. It is a fun, exciting time. The world is new. There are so many firsts. Each child is unique and special! What joy it is to watch their personalities develop. We like to encourage the development of their special skills.
Here is a brief list of some of our activities:
1. Self-Directed Play: Toys or learning centres play dough, puzzles, and books.
2. Large Muscle Activity: Running, hopping, jumping etc. Sometimes we are "airplanes" or "elephants." We also do simple aerobics.
3. Music and Rhythm band: Evening concerts in December and June in a local school.
4. Monthly Themes: Life in the far north, Animals of Africa, Hawaii, Australian Creatures, etc.
5. Arts and Crafts: Painting, bumpy dough, and paper projects.
6. Story time: Flannel board stories, puppets, records, and books.
7. Finger plays and creative dramatics.
8. Five parties per year. Special days for "winter fun," and "dinosaurs," etc.
9. Readiness Activities, science corner, nature walks or excursions.
10. We discuss the weather and the calendar every day.
11. We alternate quiet activities and active ones. In this way children do not become bored or restless. It also eliminates discipline problems.
12. We do many things to stimulate language development! We encourage them to talk and share ideas!
WHAT IF THERE IS A DISCIPLINE PROBLEM?
We actually have very few problems. However, if children are quarrelling over a toy, we usually can solve the problem by talking to each child. Sometimes, one child might need a "time-out" from the situation.
