We hope you will enjoy your child's art as he/she brings samples home to you. His/her first pictures may seem to be nothing more than daubs or scribbles. Remember 3 and 4 year olds are just getting acquainted with their abilities and the materials they work with.
Ask your child to tell you about his picture; you will be surprised that even scribbles have a story or meaning. They are eager for your comments and praise, so even if you cannot find any recognizable objects to talk about, it is possible to tell them that you like the bright colours, or the interesting shapes used. Later, your child will develop symbols that you can recognize as people, buildings, animals, trees, and other things that your child likes to put into his or her pictures.
Save a few of the early pictures to compare with those made later and you will be able to follow growth in this important area of expression. Your encouragement can do wonders!
It doesn't take very long until we learn to love everyone in our classes. It's exciting to watch the joy of discovery in the face of a child, and the light of accomplishment in their eyes when they show us their art work.
